The University of Sunderland will launch a brand-new esports-focused degree program in September 2023.

The University is the newest school in Britain to provide a focused esports curriculum. In order to promote the degree program and esports in general, the university has said that it would invest up to one million pounds in campus facility renovations. As part of the renovation, the movie theater in the school media center will have changes that will enable it to play esports events and other associated material.
The program’s objectives, according to Dr. James Scott, Head of School (Law and Tourism), are for students to “Students will explore the world of competitive gaming and learn what makes a successful esports event.” They will get extensive knowledge of the technologies required to host an esports event and the planning and management of such tournaments.
The course will use a range of teaching methods, such as field visits, workshops, seminar sessions, and recorded lectures. The course will cover more advanced topics by the third year, such as esports performance, team administration, and esports media and content creation, starting with an introduction to esports events and production in the first year.
At both the undergraduate and graduate levels, more and more esports-related courses have recently been created. The Confetti Institute of Creative Technologies, the University of Warwick, and even the esports organization Guild Esports are among the UK’s institutions and colleges creating academic programs relating to esports.
